LES STRANGE STRANGERS (2017)
Les Strange strangers is a contemporary dance/performance piece that proposes a singular meeting place between dance and animism - the belief that objects have a soul and affect us in the same way that human beings do in interaction. Inspired by this belief, Les Strange strangers aims to explore a type of relationship, both human and non-human, to the environment that surrounds us: exploring a feeling of strangeness to our environment and discovering some of its unexpected facets. The inanimate objects come alive, and the living bodies unwind. The canvas is at times amorphous, at times geometric, it shreds cardboard and reveals the reversability of space, reminding us of Alice in Wonderland’s loss of sense of identity and proportion when she falls down the rabbit hole.
Les Strange strangers has been created in residencies at Studio 303, Vermont Performance Lab, Danse à la Carte, Centre de création O vertigo, Maison de la Culture du Plateau Mont-Royal and Dance's departement of UQAM.Les Strange strangers has received the support of Studio 303, founding from Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec and David-Kilburn’s price.

With Les Strange Strangers, Audrée Juteau eloquently transforms into a choreographer after years as a go-to dancer for many, many Montreal-based dance-makers. What’s notable about this new work are the subtle sensations and the energetic connection that’s forged between the performers (Juteau and Nathan Yaffe). From the start, it’s clear something is happening between them; we’re just not connected to their reality. The invitation is to observe them listening, in their islands of reflection, the quality of their breath, the shifts in their body, revealing tiny refractions of articulation.

Ce fut un mariage heureux par la similarité des deux chorégraphes partageant une fascination commune à créer des univers absurdes, en parallèle à la réalité, digne d’une autre dimension où l’objet est traité à titre d’interprète et où l’interprète est soumis au monde plus grand que lui. […]La soirée fut un voyage dans des univers parallèles bien planants. Des œuvres plus conceptuelles, mais qui nous permettent de vivre autrement l’art du mouvement contemporain. Le corps doit s’adapter à la scénographie au lieu de l’inverse. Bien hâte de voir les prochains fantasmes de ces deux chorégraphes.
